The name “goldenrod” can conjure up two very different images: one, a beautiful column of golden bloom; or two, eye-watering, nose-sniffling misery. This much-maligned group of plants is indeed deserving of the first description, but not at all of the second. In particular, Canada goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) is an excellent native garden subject, despite its having been given an unfair rap among those who suffer from hay fever.
