Marigolds produce thiopene, a chemical that repels predatory nematodes at the root zone.

Above ground, marigold's fragrance deters aphids, whitefly, carrot rust fly, and the parent of the dreaded tomato hornworm. The best marigolds are those with the most fragrance, such as 'Lemon Gem' or 'Tangerine Gem'.
